Zeno's Conscience - Italo Svevo, William Weaver 2 stars and a half. A bit too praised and overrated for what it's worth, imho. Everybody says it's OMG funny. It is humoresque, indeed, but not haha funny; rather oh, come on! funny, if that means anything to anybody. I'm sure happy I bought it 6 times cheaper than its original price.
Speaking of psychoanalysis, (which the far-too-long-for-my-taste-novel is supposed to be about, among other things), Zeno is neither crazy nor a genius. And if he's neurotic, well then all of us are. We all struggle to give up bad habits, make the right choices, face the deaths of our loved ones or keep our conscience clear from all the dirty little things. According to some, he's an anti-hero; to me he just seems like anybody else with a bit of extra talent for writing. Send me to a shrink, ask him to make me write my memoirs and you'll see what a masterpiece I can come up with!
